Just over 25 years ago, in November 1982, Mercedes Chief Designer Bruno Sacco introduced his new 'baby' 190, codenamed W201. The 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen gets a North American preview at the New York auto show next week as a very lightly disguised TDI 4Motion concept. The production Golf station wagon will get either a 2.0-liter TDI turbocharged diesel or 1.8-liter turbocharged gasoline engine when it goes on sale in the U.S. in early 2015, but VW representatives wouldn't confirm whether a production 4Motion Golf Sportwagen would be offered.

Land Rover's new Freelander is more powerful, refined, spacious – and pricier. The range will kick off at £20,935, and first deliveries are due in November. The new Freelander range is five-door only, and Land Rover is launching with the most potent engine versions: a 158bhp 2.2-litre diesel and a 229bhp 3.2-litre straight six petrol.
